Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear's 'All in the Family' and 'The Jeffersons' (2019) Poster

7 /10

Even though the players reenacting Norman Lear shows aren't bad, they can't hold a candle to the original cast

Warning: Spoilers

For the most function, I enjoyed Jimmy Kimmel's take on having two Norman Lear shows-"All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons"-and having electric current actors portraying those iconic characters though no ane can supercede the originals, that'due south for certain! Marisa Tomei came off best with her Edith Bunker sounding quite like a Queens woman. Woody Harrelson wasn't equally good doing Archie Bunker though mayhap I'thou too used to Carroll O'Connor'southward characterization. Jamie Foxx is good at impersonating Sherman Hemsley for his George Jefferson only since he's not quite Sherman's size, his tallness doesn't really do the character justice. But really, does anyone really wait anything more than apropos whatever of the other actors playing these iconic characters? That's why at to the lowest degree it'due south a real care for seeing Marla Gibbs reprising in the role that fabricated her career: eventual Jefferson's maid Florence Johnston. She nonetheless does those lines justice peculiarly her last one at the end of her ep. Also liked Jennifer Hudson's version of "Movin' On Up", ditto Harrelson and Tomei'southward accept on "Those Were the Days" especially the latter's screeching at the end! Then on that notation, I actually enjoyed this version of Lear'due south shows and what a treat to meet him intro this special from Archie's chair! P.Due south. What a care for to meet Ms. Gibbs reunited with her "227" co-star Jackee Harry hither!

Painful to sentinel

Edith was horribly overacted past Melisa Tormei and she appeared far too young for the office, both every bit Archie'due south wife and as Gloria's mother. The actors did non appear to be playing the characters, merely rather seemed to be trying to play the original actor playing the graphic symbol. In almost cases, this didn't work well. Woody Harrelson had Archie'south accent and intonations down well, only his concrete gestures were over-the-superlative. Had to switch this testify off part fashion through, as I found information technology painful to watch these professionals offering upwardly entertainment that could accept probably been improved upon by a high schoolhouse acting grade.

Some things never modify...and some things exercise

At Norman Lear'south shows put a mirror up to everyday Americans and exposed the states, warts and all, though we didn't always recognize ourselves. I correct, am female, small-scale-town, mid-west born and raised smack dab in the middle of the Civil Rights and Women'south Liberation movements. My dad epitomized Archie Bunker. Had his chair that no one else ever sat in, and jokingly referred to mom every bit "Dingbat." She wasn't tickled. By the time "All in the Family" ceded to "Archie Bunker's Identify" my dad, finally seeing bits of himself in Archie, no longer found the graphic symbol funny or justified in his discrimination. He stopped referencing people of different ethnicities with the everyday slang he'd grown up with which denigrated them into second course citizens, and instead recognized their equality to him and his family. They weren't stealing jobs or coming to set on the womenfolk (who were conspicuously demonstrating they could fend for themselves pretty well)...these were hardworking everyday Joes just like him just trying to do what was right, accept care of their families, and stand and be counted. And as the broadcast demonstrated, then many of the divisive issues of 50 years ago remain. The content stands the exam of time. The acting? Well, these characters were written to be larger than life so some exaggeration is to be expected and not everyone tin rise to the level of the original cast. But these are stories worth telling considering we have to be reminded that no matter how far we've come up, some things never change...and some things do, like my Dad.

Disappointing

Good for nostalgia value lonely. Unfortunately, with a very few, marked exceptions (Wanda Sykes) the cast played hammed upwardly imitations of the showtime cast rather than trying to recreate the characters. The casting seemed to be about glory rather than performances. I requite this recreation a iv (poor) out of 10. [Live SitCom Reinactment?}

Bright

Simply ane word could draw this night... BRILLIANT. Performing 2 incredible episodes of shows that changed the world. The performances were fun, and complimentary to the original performers (peculiarly Jamie Foxx'due south pilus). This was a great idea

Great casting

Jamie Fox and Marissa Tormei nailed their corresponding characters. Others were good just these two stole the show in my opinion as someone who grew up watching both shows.

Terrible!

Specially failed in the remake of the "All in the Family" episode.... The acting was really bad. The portrayal of the Archie and Edith characters in particular was a complete failure --- painfully so.

I recollect these iconic characters, for one thing, volition never be duplicated. That's what fabricated them so special... Secondly, everything is far also politically correct in society today to actually exist able to capture the feeling and emotion of the chosen episodes. Folks wouldn't be able to look past their offenses to be able to catch the real meaning backside the scripts.... Certainly not as portrayed past modern actors.

They really shouldn't accept bothered.... Waste of time and try.... Would've been meliorate off showing a alive screening of the original episodes.

If you want to watch these episodes, go detect a source to stream the originals...

despite well known actors..

This was a a complete chapeau trick every bit why some classics shouldn't be touched. you lot, they,... whoever picked the worst episodes to portray should have their portrait placed on a wall of shame. equally some ane who grew up in that frame and saw both shows as funny, it was difficult to muster a snicker. the interim was spot on ,... for community theater. such talented people/actors.... simply left it flat. similar they had subliminal political message... so whats next? will they ruin happy days? in a nut beat non funny, not worth watching

Marisa, Wanda & Kerry yous nailed it!

Warning: Spoilers

I was so happy that this special lived upwards to its hype. I always loved All in the Family & The Jeffersons. Sherman, Isabel & Marla never received all of the awards they so richly deserved. Hopefully next year when the Emmys are awarded the performances volition exist remembered. I was then thrilled to see Marla Gibbs announced- she was always one of the top 3 on The Jefferson'south. Woody was disappointing every bit was Jamie. Happy it was on. The ladies were fantastic in their roles. Bang-up job.

Over acted

Jamie Foxx, who I commonly beloved, really over acted tonight, every bit did most of the cast. Wanda Sykes and Marla Gibbs were the only standout performers. The All in the Family cast was the same. Good thing the actors on both original shows were better; they never would have lasted more than than one flavor.

Absolutely Fabulous

I was astounded when I realized they were using an original script. It was astonishing. Funny funny funny. My husband and I were so surprised at how very much nosotros enjoyed it - sadly, information technology had non aged a bi40 years later. The performances were very proficient with Wanda Sykes and Marisa Tomei continuing out. Great job, everyone. Cheers and then much.

Nostalgic and as good as the originals!

I loved both episodes! I thought they were both well casted, especially Woody Harrelson as Archie Bunker and Jamie Foxx as George Jefferson. I was a petty also young to watch the originals although I did savor the Jeffersons reruns on TBS after school. It was amazing to run into how relevant these old classics are in 2019. The premise of bringing them back to bring social bug similar racism to the forefront as a way to teach lessons through laughter is vivid!! I hope they do this again with other archetype shows!!

Nice To Encounter Classic TV Shows Redone Live With No Changes, Non A Movie

It is sad that this was brought back to today's time for viewing as that is how far backward today'due south gild has come. Having said that, this was wonderfully done. Woody Harrelson and Jamie Foxx as the male stars played roles just like original, bravo! Wanda Sykes was greatest in female lead. Everyone else was acceptable and looked part playing, Then good. I hope the demographic of this live evidence brings in some views and thoughts from the young ones of today. 7/10

Absolutely crawly!!!!

Every single actor nailed the character they played. I wish Irene Lorenzo had appeared, but that wasn't a dealbreaker. I hope they do this again.

Mayhap trying just a little as well hard

Some of the actors were trying merely a little too hard to recreate the originals. Woody was a good option to play Archie, but I think he was trying just a little too hard and didn't quite hit the mark. I don't remember the original George Jefferson strutting around as much equally Jamie, and then his performance seemed a petty over the superlative. Marissa did the best recreating Edith.

ten because it reminds me of my youth, but in reality information technology should be lower

Was the acting great-no, but information technology wasn't awful. I watched All in the Family unit every bit a child and to a lesser extent The Jeffersons. This truly did remind me of those shows, the actors, the ridiculousness of some of the stereotypes. The All in the Family office was better than the Jeffersons part I think primarily because of the story. The AITF was more than faithful than the Jeffersons.

Even having said all that, I still enjoyed information technology and will rewatch it. If this was some kind of a test whether to continue this then they failed. Just equally nostalgic it was a win.

Believe the negative remarks though, as all those I've read are accurate. Fifty-fifty even so if you lot look at what I put higher up very worth watching it.

Making Tv great again!

This was great and I want more! The sets were recreated perfectly the episodes were recreated without alter, proving how timeless these classics are, and the actors reenacted them wonderfully...and I don't fifty-fifty like Wanda Sykes but I enjoyed her as Isabel Sanford's Louise and she didn't sound a affair like her. Hither's hoping for more than re-enactments from these 2 shows (ALL IN THE Family unit & THE JEFFERSONS) as well every bit other Norman Lear classics.

The Old Saying That You Can't Go Back Is Proven True For Archie and family Merely The Jefferson's, like Dr Who, Travel In Time Very Well.

When I watched these ii shows back in the 1970'southward I idea that they were funny, pointed and iconic. The fact that Archie Bunker'due south chair is in the Smithsonian Museum is proof of the impact 'All In Thre Family' had.

Something happened when we traveled dorsum in time watching the All In The Family remake, the sense of humor was lost in the translation. Was information technology that the stories did not transfer or was it that the majority of actors were amazingly junior to the original.

The acting was frequently horrible. Woody Harrelson was every bit bad as any third grader would be playing Archie. He was so obviously campy and pretentious it was similar watching a train crash. I kept turning my caput hoping to miss the carnage.

Marisa Tomei was acting like a cartoon character. Edith Bunker may have been naive merely she was non stupid. Marisa Edith was pitifully idiotic. At least Marisa'south Queen'south NY emphasis was fun to heed too.

The Jeffersons remake was a fair corporeality better. The acting was on point and humor was all the same funny. Wanda Sykes was a hilarious, but different Louise Jefferson. The original was the calming influence on her husband George while Skyes' Louise was much more caustic, much as Wanda is. Still she was very funny.

Jamie Fob was an excellent George, pompous with a auto gun mouth. He was just taller than the original George who suffered from a comical Napoleon complex.

Jennifer Hudson, looking slim and fantastic in a short tight clothes, has a big set of pipes and she gave a great live rendition of the 'Moving On Up' theme song.

The one huge and pleasant surprise was the appearance of Marla Gibbs, at present 88 years former and looking decades younger, in her original series role equally Florence the sharp witted, nemesis of George, housekeeper. She still has great comic timing and she still is Florence!

Not your fathers All In the Family

Woody Harrelson is far from what was needed to make full the neat Carol O Conners' shoes. He simply forced it too much (and not in a meaningful practiced way) every bit performances go. Wanda Sykes was an equal letdown as a match for Louises' persona. Edith , and Meathead were the best replacements. George Jefferson , and Gloria were passable. Truly the best achievement of this evidence ( and the original) was the mirror of racism being laid out in an everyday mode for all to come across, and comprehend.

Woody harrelson - such a disappointment

Alarm: Spoilers

I enjoyed it for the most part. Information technology was very entertaining- loved the nostalgia- the fact that it was live - Jamie Foxx messing upwardly and joking about it was real, raw and fun. And he picked it right up.

Woody harrelson being the exception

He ruined it. He was awful. They could have found someone else .... He ruined information technology honestly...

Simply worth watching and just ignore him and in the mind's eye imagine Carrol O'Connor and y'all will relish it lol

I enjoyed the other actors original have on the script and the characters - I wouldn't expect them to replicate perfectly the original cast that's not what I'thousand maxim

I'chiliad simply maxim Harrelsons performance was awful...

Only 2 actors stood out

Jamie Foxx did an outstanding chore of playing George. Close your optics and you'd swear information technology was Sherman Hensley. Marissa was very good as edith, although it was overacted. Wanda Sykes was absolutely horrible as Louise. She played Wanda Sykes... Like she does in every single thing she's been in. She didn't even try to embody the part of Louise. Woody Harrelson got the accent down okay. Merely other than that, information technology was a poor job. No one tin can play Archie merely O'Connor. 1 matter is for certain, no way Lear would have done a show where the liberal was portrayed as an embecile. Information technology shows merely what Hollywood thinks of conservatives that he painted bunker as the "typical" white conservative. The aforementioned way he paints George as a blackness conservative, but besides an embecile. Nonetheless, the shows were genius and funny. Wish they had added in good times. That show was 2d to only All in thr Family.
